half-height video

I just upgraded to rh8.0 from 7.1, and xawtv started giving me half-height
video in "fullscreen" mode, using vidmode. The bottom half of the screen
remains blue, and the video is squashed vertically in the upper half.

Anyone know what would cause this? In both cases it's a 2.4.18 kernel, though
the patch sets from redhat might be different. X has changed from 4.1.0 to
4.2.0. Both versions of xawtv were 3.something. I tried all of the lastest
versions which would compile w/o error (back to 3.78 or so).

The video card is a G400.

BTW, is it possible to set up hardware scaling in a way that doesn't suck? I'm
always amazed at how horrible the video looks using the xvideo extension. I
alawys use vidmode instead to match the source resolution. It gives a vastly
sharper picture. Does this depend on the hardware algorithm?
