My TVCard-equipped box was reinstalled with RH8.0 and v4l wasn't loaded by default by the autogenerated XFree config file. Now I get the video4linux adaptor when I do a 'xvinfo' (I had Load "v4l" on another machine which didn't have any TVCapture cards, so I never saw the video4linux adaptor entry before, and assumed that everything was normal). The only (minor) issue with 'Load "v4l"' enabled is that xawtv now complains of a mismatch between S-Video and svideo (somehow the XFree86 v4l module strips out all non-alpha characters). I've retested xawtv + old/new v4l2 etc. with Load "v4l" enabled, and this is what I get: 1. Kernel 2.4.20pre11 + old v4l2 + 0.1.x saa7134 + xawtv 3.82 + NVidia4191: -driver -xv/-noxv window fullscreen --------------------------------------------------------------- v4l2 -xv Ok Ok v4l2 -noxv xawtv error: No Video Grabber Device Available (!) v4l -xv Ok Ok v4l -noxv Ok Ok [Mplayer 0.90-rc2 works fine] 2. Kernel 2.4.20 + new v4l2 + 0.2.x (Jan 2) saa7134 + xawtv 3.82 + NVidia4191: -driver -xv/-noxv window fullscreen --------------------------------------------------------------- v4l2 -xv Ok Picture has regular vertical 'tyre thread tracks' running down the display v4l2 -noxv B/W picture, 3/4 width, video image slightly offset from window v4l -xv Ok 'tyre thread tracks' visible v4l -noxv No display visible (blank output window) [Mplayer 0.90-rc2 has alternating green image display problem] With the new v4l2 API and 0.2.x drivers in fullscreen mode, there are regular missing pixels that resemble the marks left by tyre threads. (Best way I know how to describe it). It's not totally static, and some pixels can be alternatively filled or cleared in the black region depending on the video content. This does not happen with the old driver. T.C. ---- Wan Tat Chee (Lecturer) School of Computer Science, Univ. Science Malaysia, 11800 Minden, Penang, Malaysia.
