It is called tearing. It occurs because your output device is doing a horizontal retrace while the picture is being drawn. Your XFree86 server can avoid this (at least for dvd playback) if you have a proper driver that supports double buffering, doing frame replace only during the vertical trace pause. The XawTV program uses the v4l extension in the XFree86 server, which doesn't enforce video updates only during the vertical retrace pause, thus you see tearing.
