I'm glad that works!

I believe that the initial modprobe sets audio to LINE1 (hardware
default). Hence no sound until you run xawtv and select TV as the input.

On channel switching, the saa7134 module mutes the audio for a short while
(1-2 seconds) until a proper audio signal is decoded.

The static sound is due to audio not being muted properly. This was
present on my FV2K too until it was solved using external muting.
(There's an additional mute: input entry for FV2K for this purpose).

However, the saa7134 chip should be able to implement on-chip audio muting
and is used for the other saa7134-based boards, so I don't advise defining
the mute: input unless nothing else works.
