I just went through this... do NOT use the pre-built files... unles EVERYTHING in the kernel number matches EXACTLY, including ALL minor revisions... your X will NOT start up again if you do... Yes, you MUST have the kernel header files (I just downloaded source to get all that I needed) to compile... I found the .SRPM to work for me, I couldn't get the tar.gz to work either, but I didn't try too long on it to be honest. it did fix a lot of performance inssues for me with the display... whereas before trying to run tux was impoissible, 1 screen refresh every 5 to 10 seconds, now things are smooth...
