Andrew, You were right again! I needed to install extra modules. There were actually instructions on what to add to the .config file in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/video4linux/bttv/README Specifically the advice, You'll need at least these config options for bttv: CONFIG_I2C=m CONFIG_I2C_ALGOBIT=m CONFIG_VIDEO_DEV=m seems to be true for saa7134 also.
