Thanks for your suggestions. 
I tried as you suggested and there now seem to be less errors.
I'm assumming that I need to change all occurrences of 
EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL
to
EXPORT_SYMBOL

Do I also need to change the argument to
the function MODULE_LICENCE("GPL") ?

Now my errors are reduced to,
