capturing a image

Hello all:

I am starting in this world, and I have configured my bt878 card 
under linux red hat 7.2. I can see images from a camera using 
"xawtv" program.

But I would like to work with my own applications for capturing and 
procesing images. Know  anybody where I can get a good set of 
libraries an examples about it.
