Is this the bttv option pll??? As I have tried it set to 0, 1 and 2,
they don't seem to have an effect. Maybe I'm not doing it correctly.

I put in the line 'options bttv	pll=2' into my modules.conf file
and then remove the running bttv module with 'rmmod bttv' reload bttv
with modprobe and then test the video card again with xawtv.

Is this correct?? I'm using PAL input from a VCR at the moment and the
video tape is definitely colour.

The actual chipset on the cards are bt878 does this matter. I think
bttv.o supports 878 ??!!??

Sounds like you may have selected a wrong standard, set modprobe
option
to select PAL clock (if PAL is what you are using.)
