You need ALSA drivers. That suite and ONLY that support AC'97 codec onboard
audio device properly! So, first go to http://www.alsa-project.org/ , download
latest one, and compile into kernel support. It's one way, the second is to
obtain kernel 2.5.x which already has support (e.g. ALSA support inside) of
that codec inside - so you need only to turn it on (via make menuconfig or
xconfig) and recompile kernel...
