Any chance you are using video + vbi at the same time?  Errors in the
logfile?

Ahem, I've recently noticed that acpi + bttv seem not to like each
other for some reason, at least not if they share a IRQ (vanilla
2.4.18-preX).  I havn't checked the details but simply diabled ACPI as
it is still flagged experimental.  Then everything was fine again ...
