what's wrong with v4l2 and xv?

If I start xawtv with -noxv I get all the controls, like chroma agc, comb
filter, automute, luma decimation filter, and _audio mode_. But I cannot
tune and get lots of segfaults with the following output:
ioctl: VIDIOC_G_TUNER(cmd=0xc090561d): Invalid argument
ioctl: VIDIOC_G_TUNER(cmd=0xc090561d): Invalid argument
ioctl: VIDIOC_S_TUNER(cmd=0x4090561e): Invalid argument
Segmentation fault

If I use XV things work perfectly, no segfaults or any crazy messages. I
would kind of enjoy those extra controls but do not get them using XV.
Especially audio mode, I think I'm only getting mono without that control.
Because without XV the audio mode shows mono until I switch it to stereo.
I may have subverted that by adding audio = stereo to my defaults section
of .xawtv, but I have no real way of knowing!

So what's the damn problem with using XV, why no extra controls? And what
problem am I having when NOT using XV?!?

I am using an STB DesktopTV with FM tuner. It has 2 audio chips, a
TEA6420 and a TDA9850T. When I specify the TEA6420 tvaudio.o option,
mute increases the volume, so hitting mute or exiting xawtv or radio
results in extremely loud volume, it does not shut off. When I specify
TDA9850 mute has no effect, which is more desired then TEA6420's idea
of mute. But still audio does not shut off when exiting tv or radio
apps. WTF is going on here?

 TIA, -Erik
