If you want full motion, watch at 50fps. Remember, each field is an independent image. > But does capture the frame rate have to be the same as the broadcast > frame rate for perfect smoothness -- i.e. with scrolling text? It should be a multiple of the framerate. i.e., you can capture PAL at the half-fieldrate of 25fps and you don't usually screw your motion. However, consider 3:2 pulldown material at 59.94fps. If you capture that at 29.97fps, you'll get badly jerky motion because every second frame is now shown for twice as long, as opposed to the 1/3'rd as long when played at 59.94fps. So, it has to be a multiple of the original framerate, barring any conversion. Take a look at the conversion from NTSC->PAL of the simpsons on my DVD page: http://www.dumbterm.net/graphics/dvd/ It's at the bottom. You'll see they convert by showing blurred fields. If you take every second field there (play at 25fps), you'll alternate between long sequences of completely blurred frames, then back to nice looking frames, etc. > If one captures NTSC at 25 fps what happens?
