how to enable video for linux in my kernel config?

Hello,
I'm a new linux user and I'm trying to install videodevX. I see a sentence
at the v4l2 website that says before installing videodevX, I will need to
enable Video for linux in my kernel config as a module. I try to
understand how that's done (what that means).

I tried to locate kernel.conf with "whereis kernel.conf" and I get
"kernel: /usr/src/linux-2.4.8/kernel /usr/src/linux/kernel/", but when I
get into one of these directories I only see .c files there but not the
kernel.conf file.

Also if I get the kernel.conf file what changes/additions should I make to
it to implement what's indicated in the above sentence at v4l2 website.

Thanks and best regards.
