Not entirely true.

Since the 1.5-CVS series (snapshots available on our website), lavrec has
been able to record JPEG video from generic v4l devices as well. I just
didn't update the manpages/docs yet :-). "lavrec --software-encoding
--input=[nps] --geometry=<width>x<height> /path/to/recorded_movie.avi"
should do the trick...

Other applications within the mjpegtools can encode the MJPEG video to MPEG
or divx.
