I have tried ffmpeg alone, and it gave me nothing but trouble - it seems that ffmpeg varies the capture framerate, even when you specify the frame rate on the command line. However, I am very happy with FFMPEGrec (part of NVrec), which uses the ffmpeg codecs, but with a much better synchronisation model - I have no, zero, none problems with audio sync when using FFMPEGrec. I am encoding divx in realtime with 512x384 at 50% CPU on an Athlon 1.2GHz.
