best compression method from v4l1 device

I am wondering what everybody is using for compressing capture streams
from their v4l1 devices. I have been using something called "vcr"
which uses avifile to do the actual encoding/compressing.

It is working using the (Windows divxc32.dll) Low Motion Divx codec,
but despite losing < 0.0% (but >0) frames during capture and losing 0
(none) frames during encoding, my resulting stream is still quite
"jerky". This is on an 800Mhz Athlon processor. The CPU only goes to
about 50% during capture/compression so I don't think I am CPU bound.

I am using an A7V mobo with PC 133 ram onboard. Maybe I don't have
the bandwidth on the mobo for this?

Anyone care to share their compression/encoding solutions?

Thanx,
b.
