Ok, I was not correct when I said that they don't have rate control features ... They do have rate control. I managed to test their codec against DivX 4.0. Quality is about the same or sometimes a little worse as DivX 4.0 at the same bitrate with maximum picture postprocessing level, encoder is roughly 4 times slower than DivX 4.0 ( but I think that it's faster than OpenDivX ), and decoder is somewhat slower ( also compared to DivX 4.0 w/max postprocessing ). It can become a really good codec if open-source community spends enough time on its optimization. -----Original Message----- From: video4linux-list-admin@xxxxxxxxxx [mailto:video4linux-list-admin@xxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Alan Cox Sent: Tuesday, August 21, 2001 11:50 AM To: ekuznetsov@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: Alan Cox; video4linux-list@xxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Re[2]: [more about divx :-) format mutations please!] > can't say anything about VP3 except that the sources are 'still' not > available for download and their binary codec has no rate control > features. Picture quality is perfect, but at 2500 kbps for 512x384 > everyone can do that. September. There is work they have to do as you'd expect.
