I apologize in advance for this message being off-topic. I never said audio recognition, I said audio fingerprinting. Basically, if a commercial is played twice, the fingerprints will match. Also, the algorithm we use is pretty good at ignoring noise or few second offset. Secondly, the large corporations aren't going to change any time soon. There is already a large gathering of people who trade TV shows, mostly on IRC. Up until now, every show was striped of commercials by hand. This isn't a big deal, because it only takes about 3 minutes/episode. What we are working on just speeds the process up. Yeah sure, broadcasters could do all sorts of stuff to mess up commercial detection, but it would affect normal viewers. Not to mention people will still be able to do it by hand. I think the TV episode scene will turn out like the mp3 scene. Everyone is targeting the trading of files (napster etc.) but not the mp3 rippers.
