Q: "overlay"/"grabdisplay" don't work for user, but only "overlay" works for root?

Hello there list!

I have a strange problem with xawtv 3.18 and v4l. I do not know what and where to look for to make sure "grabdisplay" works in xawtv. This is most of the output from xawtv on startup (started as non-root user):

  WARNING: v4l and dga disagree about the framebuffer base
  WARNING: Is v4l-conf installed correctly?
  ov_fbuf.base=(nil), base=0xd8000000
  WARNING: overlay mode disabled
  wmhooks: gnome
  ioctl VIDIOCMCAPTURE(0,-,0x0): Invalid argument
  ioctl VIDIOCMCAPTURE(1,-,0x0): Invalid argument
  ioctl VIDIOCSYNC: Invalid argument
  ioctl VIDIOCSYNC: Invalid argument
  ioctl VIDIOCMCAPTURE(0,-,0x0): Invalid argument
  ioctl VIDIOCMCAPTURE(1,-,0x0): Invalid argument
  ioctl VIDIOCSYNC: Invalid argument
  ioctl VIDIOCSYNC: Invalid argument
  v4l: oops: got sigalarm
  ioctl VIDIOCSYNC: Interrupted system call

Then the image freezes, but sound runs smoothly. I can normally exit xawtv with "q". I cannot switch the mode to "overlay" here.

Starting it as root lets xawtv run fine in "overlay"-mode, but I cannot change to "grabdisplay". If I try this I get:

  v4l: oops: got sigalarm
  ioctl VIDIOCSYNC: Interrupted system call

on the console.

This is what gets written in /var/log/messages when starting xawtv:

  Mar  8 15:35:51 HAL9000 kernel: bttv0: PLL: 28636363 => 35468950 ... ok

How do I best fix this "grabdisplay"-problem?

Thanks in advance for your help and kind advice!

Best regards...
