Make sure you have a 640x480 mode, or one that similarly matches the
resolution of the broadcast standard you're trying to display. Since you say
you get a fullscreen display when you use "ctrl alt -", I suspect you
already have such a mode. If you don't, reconfigure your X server to add
one. Then add these lines to your $HOME/.xawtv file:

[global]
fullscreen = 640 x 480

Where 640 x 480 is whatever video mode matches up with the size of the
broadcast picture in your area. (640x480 is NTSC, the broadcast standard in
North America)
