Thanks! bit_test=1 is mentioned in Documentation/video4linux/bttv/Modules.conf, and I should have used it in the first place, but at home (ATI Rage 128, WinTV GO, single processor) the modules load fine without it, so I neglected to add it on this system (TNT2, AverMedia EZ Capture, dual processor).
