I had the same problem with kvintv. I'm not sure exactly what cured it
because I did a few things all at once. First I got the VERY LATEST
bttv and related stuff installed. Then I set the line on the mixer(kmix)
to 0 (mute) and (using kde2) set the sound preferences to save settings
as default. Then I added a command to my boot.local file
" amixer set Line 0 " for good measure. You would need to be using alsa
for that one. Again I'm not sure which thing fixed it but I beleive it
was the installationi of the latest v4l1 stuff. The only way to get the
sound off was to power the machine down. Reboot did not work. This
bugged
the *&@% out of me. Good luck.

After I got it working I posted what I had done to myself on the kwintv
list. Here is a piece of that message.

Ok I've got the sound turning off when I exit kwintv. What I
did was
go and get the latest i2c-2.5.4, lm_sensors-2.5.4,
bttv-0.7.51 and
patch my 2.2.16 kernel tree and set my /etc/modules.conf
like the
Insmod-options in the bttv package showed.

I still get the modprobe error shown above. It turns out
that
major-81-1 is /dev/video1. ?????? I've only got one card
(video0).
