For those of you who may be interested, SGI has released the open
source code for it's "Digital Media Software Development Kit" (or
dmSDK). (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/010104/ca_sgi_ope.html)

This library is basically a library that utilizes a "thin" layer
(above for example, the Video4Linux and Open Sound System drivers)
to provide a common interface to user applications. It has been
been accepted as the prototype for the OpenML digital media
component by the Khronos Group (www.khronos.org), (OpenGL is the
graphics component). It's envisioned that OpenML will provide a
seemless integration of audio, video and graphics on a wide range
of platforms.
