The Bt829 (and newer Bt835) are side-port video decoders. That is, they send decoded video to the video controller via the 'bytestream' protocol into the VIP (video input port). These are similar to the SAA7114 in that they are not PCI bus masters. The SAA7114 (from Philips) uses ITU656 (CCIR656) protocol timing codes to send decoded video data to the VIP. The Bt848/Bt878, which are PCI bus masters, can DMA decoded video data to system memory and are not dependent on a particular video controller to do the DMA. So, to program the Bt829, you would have to also program the video controller. As Dusty mentioned, the GATOS project for the ATI cards is one such implementation.
