I was surprised not to find an FAQ on http://www.exploits.org/v4l/ as I was expecting this to be a common question.

I can see my usb webcam device in /proc/bus/usb/devices but no manufacturer is listed.

Check the vendor and product ID against the table at the *bottom* of: http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/cameras.html

Also, search for the vendor ID at http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/

If you can't find a match, post /proc/bus/usb/devices here.

It's a no name webcam, el-cheapo but uses `standard` drivers according to the manual and indeed on windows it seems to.

Strange, there are no standard USB video drivers yet that I know of. I think the manual is lying. :) Perhaps Windows came with the appropriate proprietary driver.

Is there a guide I can read to identifying how to get v4l going including how to identify the hardware?

Here is a fairly complete one: http://hshanemd.net/docs/HOWTOS/Webcam/
