Using v4l to do basic video (file) processing?

Hi folks,

I'm using V4L to grab / display video from my Osprey100 card. Works great. Now I'm thinking of moving ahead to reading / writing various video file formats. It may sound silly, but it just occurred to me that V4L might have some built in functionality for this? I'm looking at Gstreamer too, but am having some trouble getting it installed / working properly under Slackware 9.1

Thanks,

DT
