Digital cameras use a completely different interface from V4L.  Usually they
only have a slow USB1.1 interface and use some kind of protocol like PTP or
appear as a mass storage device.  People who want to download lots of digital
images usually buy a faster USB2 flash card reader and use that.  My digital
camera can't be told to take pictures via computer control, and won't even
manually take pictures when the USB interface is connected.

I don't know of any virtual V4L driver that serves as wrapper around
gphoto to turn a digital camera into a cheap high-def webcam.  It's an
interesting idea though.
