Thanks, this was the problem. There is always more to learn. :-) I had my
ov511 module built into the kernel, so I had to recompile that to be
able to use
it as a module, but things worked great as soon as I did so.

For others with the same problem, add the following to /etc/modules.conf

alias char-major-166 ov511
options ov511 cams=2

I am not yet sure if I will be able to use this for playing around with
stereo
vision due to the way the two cameras refresh. One then the other, but I'll
play around and see if I get their refreshes to be in synch with each other.

Adding a second USB controller card may help out with the speed / refresh
problems. Unfortunately, the machine I am currently using is a bit old and
only has a single USB bus/controller.
