If you're just going to show video (as in: TV watching), then simply use
the v4l/Xv extension in XFree86, it makes development a lot easier, and
you don't need to use v4l/posix code. Xawtv contains example code in.

Either way, it should just work, I've been doing the same thing (but
using Gtk) for years now. :).
