I've tried all the audiomux settings you mentioned, and none of them
seem to have made any difference so far. still no audio when i try to
tune the radio, or noise from static in xawtv.

I used one of the utilities in the bttv/Sound-FAQ file you mentioned in
windows, and captured a heap of output, although i'm not completely sure
if the information is even correct:
