I pulled this off the net, it's the same problem that I'm having, does anyone have an answer?

I was afraid of that. Somehow xawtv seems happy to change the values,
but it does complain when it first starts up if I've already run MythTV:

pioctl:
VIDIOCSPICT(brightness=32768;hue=32768;colour=32512;contrast=27648;whiteness=0;depth=0;palette=unknown):
Invalid argument
ioctl:
VIDIOCSPICT(brightness=32768;hue=32768;colour=32512;contrast=27648;whiteness=0;depth=0;palette=unknown):
Invalid argument
ioctl:
VIDIOCSPICT(brightness=32768;hue=32768;colour=32512;contrast=27648;whiteness=0;depth=0;palette=unknown):
Invalid argument
ioctl:
VIDIOCSPICT(brightness=32768;hue=32768;colour=32512;contrast=27648;whiteness=0;depth=0;palette=unknown):
Invalid argument

I don't know if that's an indication of anything but my system's
brokenness, but I thought I'd share my pain :-) Is anyone else running
with Red Hat 9's latest kernel (2.4.20-18.9)?

Mike
