I'm not an expert in writing kernel modules too :)
But, imho, writing the simple character device driver is not too hard.

Now I have similar problem - I need to control MasterVideo's 4-port bt878 
card, and I need to access bt878's i2c and gpio from userspace in 
some way. I will looking at this and may be I'll write appropriate 
driver (or modify bttv driver).
So, if you are not under time pressure, stay tuned ;)
