xawtv, lirc, and repeat

xawtv is responding to multiple repeats of the same key. For example 
if I push 1 then 2 (to go to channel 12), the key will repeat sending 
me to channel 11, then channel 22. If I have no .lircrc xawtv works 
as expected. The keys do not repeat.

My .lircrc looks like this.
	begin xawtv
	        begin
	                prog = xawtv
	                config = eventmap
	                repeat = 0
	        end
	end xawtv

Volume should repeat, channel up and channel down should repeat 
slowly. But the digits should definitely not repeat.

How do I fix this? I'd like to use .lircrc for other things, for 
example using a key to start xawtv, so I'd rather not simply remove 
the .lircrc file.
