Yes. bttv prints the version number to the log at insmod time, should
easy to figure which version you are using.

0.8.x and 0.9.x versions can handle read(). bttv 0.8.x even has a
insmod option to disable mmap() for testing purposes.
IIRC also some usb webcam drivers support capture using read().
