Well maybe that's my problem... If we're talking all console stuff here I have no idea what audio ... driver (?) it's using. How can I tell, and where do I look to change the settings for that. It could be it's just not set to record the line-in maybe?

It's a RH 8.0 box, and /etc/asound.state doesn't seem to be present.

Are you using oss or alsa? I had much problems with enabling sound for
capturing using alsa. I dont know exactly what should be turned for it to
work, but I have played with alsamixer (turning on capture) and editing
/etc/asound.state.
