That is just not true any more. I have a VIA based motherboard and am
happy with it, everything just works fine, and believe me, I have
quite a load of cards on it:
 SBLive, Adaptec SCSI, HPT-370 IDE controller, SMC Etherpower,
 PCTV Pro, and of course the AGP video card and the IDE controller
 on the motherboard, and they are OK. 

I would never, ever buy anything that is Intel anymore, except for the
EtherExpress Pro. But that is getting a bit offtopic so I stop right here.
