I haven't noticed its poor quality on DVDs yet. It appears that the
mplayer I have doesn't support -tv, I'm downloading the current version
now and will try it out

Did you mean 0x2000 or 0x20000 ? 0x2000 is just a horizontal filter,
at least according to the sources...
If you meant 0x20000 then that's the mplayer linear blend filter.
Unfortunately, it gives very poor quality on high motion, and badly
blurs images. It's an option in tvtime 0.9.6 though :)
