I had the same problem with debianized vcr and I spent ages trying to
solve it. Then, after a few days, a new debian/sid version of vcr was
released which fixed the problem. The ChangeLog entry was:

vcr (1.09-9) unstable; urgency=low

  * Applied patch from Ray Olszewski <ray@xxxxxxxxxxx> which fixes the
    "mirroring" bug. (closes: #153708)

So there's a patch somewhere to fix it. The problem occured for me after
vcr was recompiled to account for avifile changes:

vcr (1.09-8) unstable; urgency=low

  * another recompile to account for avifile changes. (closes: #153707)

Regards,
Dave.
