I don't really have experience with this, I have several problems with frame- buffer myself (fbtv being black and white only) but I did have a quick idea while reading your message. Mplayer has svgalib output, which is very fast. And svgalib has framebuffer support. Perhaps you can use this? I believe you set svgalib chipset as fbdev.
