  I don't know how xawtv 'compresses' its frames, but having more noise
in the image shouldn't affect its realtime compression that much.

  If the tape or VCR is really messed up, I could see the bttv card not
being able to keep in sync with it.

  Regardless, no recorder should drop any frames if you're only
recording at 100x100 resolution.  You're looking at 30k per frame
uncompressed.  This is clearly a problem with your capture card and VCR
not playing nice together.
