mayhaps the path to bttv.o isn't defined in the /etc/modules.conf file?
ensure this by running 'depmod -av|grep bttv'

you will need to edit your /etc/modules.conf file and add a section thus:

----------------snip-------------
path[v4l]=/lib/modules/path/to/bttv.o
----------------snip-------------

you can use 'find /lib/modules|grep bttv' to locate the module.

you need not boot the old kernel. you can reconfigure the kernel from any
version, and you may not even have to reboot if you have only added/modified
modules, without making changes to the kernel itself.
