Luckily enough my distro vendor's kernel is robust enough that I don't
need to build my own kernels and I am hesitant to start just for bttv
0.8.

Is going from v4l2&bttv-0.7 to v4l2&bttv-0.8 really worth starting to
build my own kernels?
