Hi,

I'm a bit confused. I want to set up motion security software on a
server machine which doesn't need X installed. But before I can do
that I need to install V4L on the server machine but I'm not sure
how to go about doing it.

So far I've tried Mandrake 8.0 in server mode which found my
hardware which is a Grandtec Multi Capture card (bt878) and
installed bttv (I think). However, the machine takes forever to
boot. It gets to "checking modules dependancies" and takes ages
before continuing to "checking for new hardware" where again it
takes ages before continuing. In modules.conf there are four
entries for bttv without any options.

I've also tried Red Hat 7.1 in server mode hoping that it too would
detect my hardware and maybe set it up better but the bttv module
isn't loaded and I dont know how to set it up manually.

Can anyone help with this?

Is there a recommended proceedure for getting a video capture card
to work with linux?

What's the easiest distro / method for a newbie to use?

Should I use V4L2?

Is there a howto anywhere?

Many thanks in advance for any help.
