xawtv: flying stripes with XVideo/v4l

This one is interesting, but I've gotten to the point that I'm pulling
out my last hairs on this one:

Xawtv shows only moving vertical stripes changing color.  When I run
with -noxv everything is fine (except black horizontal lines in
overlay when scaling the image - a separate issue I believe).  Nothing
seeming out of the ordinary in debug messages (attached below).  HELP
Please, any ideas?
