parport webcam ii problems

hi.
i have a creative video blaster webcam ii that i cant get working.
(and i've been trying feverishly for over a week now)
i run redhat 7.1 (released with kernel 2.4.2-2) which installs with modular
support for the 'cpia' based webcams, which from my research should be what
my camera is.
right off the bat, if i try and insert the module, i get this.
Linux video capture interface: v1.00
V4L-Driver for Vision CPiA based cameras v0.7.4
Parallel port driver for Vision CPiA based cameras v0.7.4
Winbond Super-IO detection, now testing ports 3F0,370,250,4E,2E ...

Winbond LPT Config: cr_30=01 60,61=0378 70=07 74=03, f0=02

Winbond LPT Config: irqtype=pulsed low, high-Z, ECP fifo threshold=0
Winbond LPT Config: Port mode=ECP

0x378: FIFO is 16 bytes
0x378: writeIntrThreshold is 16
0x378: readIntrThreshold is 16
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778) [PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,EPP,ECP]
parport0: irq 7 detected
 usb.c: registered new driver cpia

now, from what i've been reading, somewhere in my logs it should say
something like "0 cameras found" or "1 camera found", but i get nothing.
i've read that you have to have support for 1284 something with your
parralel port, so i tried recompiling the 2.4.2-2 kernel, but evidently
redhat has sabotaged the kernel or something, because when it comes time to
build the modules, it craps out. so i figured, i'll bump up to kernel 2.4.6,
install all video and parralel support into the kernel. well, when i boot
with 2.4.6, the only message about a camera i get is
V4L-Driver for Vision CPiA based cameras v0.7.4
Parallel port driver for Vision CPiA based cameras v0.7.4
i've downloaded the latest (CVS) cpia module, and compiled and loaded it
with the same results.
also, i've seen mentioned is the references to /dev/video, well with redhat
7.1 /dev/video is a directory, so i've moved /dev/video to /dev/video~ and
made /dev/video a link to /dev/video0, with same results.
i've tried numerous programs to capture webcam images, most saying something
to the fact that /dev/video is not a valid device...
all i'd like to do is capture an image every couple seconds. if anyone can
point me in the right direction!!!
thanks
joe
