Re: V4L2 Driver Compile Problem

Hi

Thanks Alan for the clarifying this ...

System: SMP (2xPentIII 700, 500MB ram), Red Hat 7.1 upgraded last week. Bttv never worked, but worked just fine with 2.2.15.

Compiled Kernel 2.4.5 with the necessary v4l and i2c stuff. I have a problem with loading bttv: Error message when I try to "insmod bttv":

/lib/modules/2.4..5/kernel/drivers/media/video/bttv.o: unresolved symbol i2c_bit_add_bus_Rsmp_d53ef5ba

There are about 6 lines all similar to the above ...is is something to do with smp? Thanks.

That error is normal, and can occur with some newer kernel versions. It
should not break the build though. Note that RedHat 7.1 ships with an
unstable development compiler unsuitable for building modules. You
should add "CC=kgcc" as the first line of "Makefile".

I could get very very bored of this myth. Even Linus appears to build his
2.4.x kernels with gcc 2.96-8x. If you build a module with egcs it will not
run with a gcc 2.95 or gcc 2.96 built kernel. Furthermore you shouldnt use
egcs-1.1.2 (aka kgcc) for 2.4.x < 2.4.5 because they lack the strstr changes
and egcs will miscompile certain obscure things like the depca driver.
