xawtv problems

After trying for about two weeks, I have not had any success getting my ADS
TV card to work. I have compiled the kernel (2.4.2-2, redhat 7.1) with
video4linux and I put the bt878 in a module. when I try to run xawtv, I
get the error "The app-defaults file is not correctly installed.

I compiled the latest (3.43) version of xawtv, but that didn't help. I also
tried to get a new version of bttv, but the latest won't compile, something
about an unknown field "fops" specified in the initializer. I did manage
to compile bttv-0.7.64, but that didn't do much for me.

I feel like I am trying the wrong things. The error seems to indicate that
something is messed up with my X11 configuration. I would like to know why
I cannot compile bttv, though.

Can someone help me with determining why I cannot run xawtv?

Thanks,

Raymond
