I haven't seen this problem myself, and don't really know what is going
wrong, but a first guess would be that xawtv uses more buffers with
v4l2, and hence more Xvideo resources.  Perhaps you could try reduce
your virtual resoultion and try again.  Alternatively "xawtv -noxv" 
would deactivate xv support.
